For many years there has been much said among scientists and veterinarians in the horseindustry on the use of high-fat and low-starch feed for horses. Most agree that fat is the most efficient and energetic, yet gentle energy supplements you can give to your horse. One kilogram of oil contains approximately 32-37MJ, that can be compared with for example oats, that contains somewhere about 10MJ / kg.
Forage of excellent quality, of course, always has to be the backbone of a horses diet.
Research conducted at among others Kentucky Equine Reaearch Center and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, indicates that horses fed a high-fat diet reacts less on pressure (a high-fat diet results in softer, smoother and more sustained muscles), loud noises and sudden visual stimuli than horses standing on a more traditional high-carbohydrate diet .
This conclusion indicates that an increased intake of fatty acids and reduced carbohydrate intake can make a big difference in how horses act in situations that might cause nervous reactions.

How it works
Fatty acids contain several times more energy than both carbohydrates and protein, allowing fatty acids to be the safest choice when you want to increase the energy in the horse's diet.
Starch can easily affect the pH-balance of the horse's gut negatively. When given in large volumes it can - among other things - result in colic, ulcers or laminitis.
Increased amount of fatty acids in the diet provides a good opportunity to drastically reduce grain-feed because the fat meets the demands of the horse's energy needs. Research carried out among others at SLU - the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, has shown that fatty acids often stands for better results in terms of weight gain, maintain weight, and increase energy and stamina - but with very reduced risk for the horse's health.
The energy is more available for the horse's metabolism in a water-soluble form, which makes it possible for the horse to digest the product easily and immediately without disturbing intestinal functions, or cause increased strain on the liver or kidneys, and to transport the energy directly to the muscles.
